Camp ConnectionCustom Hot Pressing Guide

There are a lot of variables in our Custom Hot Pressing process, so we have put together this quick guide to help answer any questions, to help make your decisions easier, and to be sure you know what to expect.

General

Hot pressed duffelHot pressing is the ideal method to label your camp or travel duffel bag, or put a quick message on your clothing.  It is permanent, bright and durable.

Hot pressing is not like Silk Screening (Silk screening is how most of your favorite printed t-shirts are made).  We are not applying fabric paint to our garments and bags, we are heat-sealing pre-cut vinyl lettering.  Silk Screening is an efficient process in bulk, but is incredibly expensive when all you want is one or two pieces.  Heat sealing is quick and relatively inexpensive but there are a couple of drawbacks.

  • We are limited to the colours and the pre-cut numbers and letters we keep in stock.  No special fonts, characters, punctuation or images are available.
  • The fact that Hot Press Lettering can sometimes show slight marks from the Teflon used to hold the letters in place, and that the lettering is applied by hand on each item can yield some slight imperfections.

Timing

When we are busy with custom work, we tend to be VERY busy.  In-Store, our average time for Walk-in/pick-up orders is 5 days.  We try to ship custom pressed orders in 3-4 days ( Sorry, You cannot order on-line for in-store pick up, or vice-versa)

Hot pressing can be anywhere from 2 days to 7 days before shipping.  During the months of May, June and July we have extended the ship date to as much as 8 days, simply due to volume.  The time to process and press your custom order is not included in our ship time estimates.  If timing is a concern, please send an email or give us a call.  The best way to get your order by the time you need it is to simply order early.

If your on-line order contains additional items that are not to be custom hot pressed, be aware that your entire order will be delayed until the custom items are ready to ship.  If you would like the other items to leave as soon as they are ready and the Hot pressed ones to follow, please place two separate orders.

Placement and word choice

Odd Numbered PantsWe cannot press letters over top of seams, it just doesn’t work.  This is most often an issue when pressing across the back of sweat pants.  If you are ordering lettering across the bum of a pair of sweat pants, try to order words with an even number of letters (2, 4, 6).  Words with odd numbers of letters (5,7) will be shifted and spaced to center them to the best of our ability.

Do Not choose words with only 3 letters to go across the bum of pants.  There is no way to space these and make them look good.

Letter SpacingBe aware that we use only capital letters, in a 3 inch block font.  Pay attention to your spacing.  When you place an A next to Y, or an L next to a T (there are other letters with similar issues) you will get exaggerated-looking spacing.  Especially if there is gap required for a seam between the two letters.

Colours

We are often asked: “What colour looks best?” That really depends on your personal taste and why you are having the hot pressing done.  Having said that, there is some advice we can give:

Letter ColoursWhite is the strongest colour, and contrasts well with almost everything we press. White is the most effective colour on all duffel Bags because it stands out the best, and makes your items more easily identifiable.

Black contrasts best with oxford or pearl grey sweat pants.

Red provides the least contrast, but does look good on navy sweat pants.

Pink is the lightest colour.  It contrasts best with black.  The colour of the garment or bag being pressed may show through the lettering because pink is a lighter colour and uses lighter weight vinyl.

What do we mean when we say “Expect some slight imperfections”?

Most times the ‘slight imperfections’ are something that only the hot press operator would ever notice.  A letter being a little off-kilter, or slightly out of place is the usual culprit. By the time you put on your garment or load up a duffel bag, that minor misplacement is virtually invisible.

Custom hot press lettering is laid out by hand, transferred to the garment by hand, and pressed using a manual machine.  There is no laser guided computer to pinpoint placements.  Plus, when you hit vinyl and fabric with sudden high heat they expand and contract, and sometimes ‘crawl’ – even the most precise placements can go askew and there is nothing the operator can do about it.

Be assured that we will not send you something that is not up to our standards, but we will also not replace an entire item because one or two letters are a little out of place or slightly discoloured.

That’s it, that’s all we’ve got. We hope This information helps you answer any questions, if not, please email us. It's always better to ask than end up with an item you don't like.
